Umut Oran was born in Germany in 1963 when his mother and father were conducting their medical studies. He finished high school in Saint- Benoit and studied Economics in Marmara University. He speaks English and French.
PROFILE After his university degree he started to work in Bozkurt Mensucat which is a Koç Holding’s textile company. He resumed his professional career by continuing his work in Öztek Tekstil as a Production and Sales & Marketing Manager.
He established his own company in 1992 under the commercial title of Domino Textile Goods Industry and Foreign Trade Inc. The factory of Domino Tekstil was established in Bolu in line with the Umut Oran’s mission since 1996 of “creating employment opportunities for the people who live in the Anatolian regions” and started its production on a 30.000 m2 open and 10.000 m2 covered areas on which factory buildings were constructed in 1997. Currently 600 employees work in Domino Tekstil which is an integrated sewing plant. After Domino Tekstil’s giant initiative which created a great deal of employment opportunities for the region, many other ready-to-wear companies also started to invest in the region. In Domino Tekstil factories all the personnel of whose are from city of Bolu, the production and exporting of the goods to US and European brands are being conducted in line with the international technical, social and environment specifications.
PRESIDENCY OF TGSD Umut Oran, who became a member of TGSD (Turkish Clothing Manufacturers’ Association) on 1993, was appointed CEO of this institution in 28 February 2002. Starting from the first day of his appointment to CEO, never complied with the current conditions and spent efforts on creating employment opportunities in Anatolia and to making the laws 4325 and 5084 designed for tax-exemption for developing regions of Turkey thus he worked on promoting the Turkish clothing manufacture business all across the world to be the leader.
During his presidency, TGSD (Turkish Clothing Manufacturers’ Association) initiated the opening of the Anatolian region of the country to Local and International investors with the slogan of “Job, food and peace in its own location” a part of the Project “Encouraging Investment and Employment in Anatolia”. TGSD started off the project called “UFUK 2010” in order to be able to provide a vision for the future to the sector. TGSD was involved in a lot of lobbying activities in Turkey and abroad and worked to be able to form a system that would lower the state contribution to minimum wage up to an acceptable global average and employing higher numbers to be able to overcome the problems of unrecorded economy.
He represented the Turkish private sector in many platforms such as (WTO), EC, and US Foreign Trade and worked on several projects.
Umut Oran who is known in the sector with his reconciling and uniting personality was also President of Istanbul International Fashion Fair Council (IIFF) between years 2002-2005.
Umut Oran who was appointed CEO of TGSD (Turkish Clothing Manufacturers Association) in 28 February 2002 resigned from his post after 3 successful years.
PRESIDENCY OF THE ASSEMBLY OF BOLU CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY having had investments in Bolu, the pilot city for the “Job, food and peace in its own location” project, he was appointed to the Presidential position of the assembly of Bolu Chamber of Commerce and Industry in March 2005.
PRESIDENCY OF THE ASSEMBLY OF TURKISH CONFECTION AND APPAREL INDUSTRY WHICH IS A DIVISION IN TOBB (THE UNION OF CHAMBERS AND COMMODITY EXCHANGES OF TURKEY) As a result of the meeting of the Assembly of Turkish Confection and ready-to-wear Industry held on 17 July 2006, he was inducted as President of the Assembly of Turkish Confection and Ready-to-wear Industry, an affiliated organization of TOBB (The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey).
HIS INTERNATIONAL TASKS Umut Oran has actively taken part in the international ready-to-wear institutions in line with globalisation and understanding of the increasing importance of voicing local problems in the international arenas and being active all across the globe.
In December 2nd, 2002, he overtook the Presidency of IAF (International Apparel Federation) and organized the 19th world congress of IAF being held in Istanbul in June and concluded his mission on 3rd December 2003 with an outstanding achievement.
Between the years 2000-2005, he became the member of board of Euratex Directors (The European Apparel and Textile Organisation) and President of the Apparel section of Euratex.
AWARDS the “Encouraging Investment and Employment in Anatolia Project” conducted by TGSD, “Regional development based on Exports Project Award” awarded by the monthly economy and finance magazine Globus owned by the Dunya newspaper in October 2002 within the framework of “Export Masters 2002 – Export Incentives” Awards, “Social responsibility” award given by Platin Ekonomi and Aktualite magazines within the framework of “Platin Zirvedekiler 2003“, “The most successful young person of Turkey 2003” contest, “Business World, Economics, and Initiative” award offered by JAYCEES Turkey (Junior Chamber Türkiye), “Homeless Animals Association) 2003 friendship award on “Environment and Friendship”. TGSD has won the award of “NGO of the year” by Dünya newspaper within the framework of 2003 elections of “The Honor Awards of the Economy” while he was the President of TGSD. The Award of “The Manager of the Year 2007” given by Istanbul University, Faculty of Management & Dünya newspaper.
Oran is also a member of CHP (Republican Public Party), and has been holding membership of the esteemed institutions such as Executive Council of GAP (Southeastern Anatolian Development Project) Development Platform, Ataturkist Ideology Association, Association in support of Contemporary Living and honorary membership of Turkish Armed Forces Foundation.
